This is a dish that has always been very popular in Cork and Dublin; however, over the years it has overflowed into all the counties of Ireland and makes its appearance in butcher’s shops and on some menus in December each year. It has become so popular that it is now one of the items that feature in the Craft Butcher competitions nationwide.  Each year there are hundreds of entries competing for several awards, however, the Holy Grail is the top award of “National Champion Spiced Beef”.  This year 2010 Jerry  Pat O’Leary from O’Leary’s Family Butcher’s in Millstreet has that honour.  Against serious stiff competition he scooped the top award.  This is all the more impressive when you realise that in 2009 James O’Leary won the National Champion award for the Best Traditional Sausage in Ireland.
